The University of Washington's Institute for Risk Analysis and Risk Communication seeks a Scientific Director

As a member of the Institute for Risk Analysis and Risk Communication (IRARC) the Scientific Director will work under the supervision of the Director, Dr. Elaine Faustman, to conduct and facilitate the research of IRARC. Depending on the skills and qualifications of applicants, the
position could include: laboratory research conduct and laboratory management; risk assessment methods development and application; and supervision of staff, post-doctoral fellows, other scientists and graduate students.

IRARC aims to improve the quality and relevance of the scientific information base and methods that are used in risk assessment and to educate scientists and other practitioners in the appropriate
application of risk assessment and risk communication. IRARC focuses its research efforts on projects with direct relevance to the use, application, and communication of risk. Current laboratory research includes projects evaluating toxicant impacts at the molecular, cellular, and whole organism level. IRARC research combines results from molecular and cellular laboratory work to develop mechanistic models (toxicokinetic and dynamic) of developmental toxicity.

There are three major research programs funded under IRARC including the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP), the new Center for Child Environmental Health Risks Research (CHC), and the Center for the Study and Improvement of Regulation (CSIR). CRESP's mission is to advance protective and cost effective clean-up and to enhance stakeholder understanding of the nation's nuclear weapons production facility waste sites by improving the scientific and technical basis of environmental management decisions. A major focus of the CRESP project has been aimed at assessing worker and public health risk across the DOE complex. The CHC aims to improve children's health by gaining a better understanding of the impact of pesticides on growth and development. Research projects include assessing molecular impacts of pesticides on the developing nervous system, assessing neurobehavioral consequences, and linking this information with pesticide field studies and human exposure assessment. CSIR aims to improve health and safety regulations by merging the study of pollution, risk, public health, technology, and economics.

The ideal candidate for the IRARC Scientific Director position is a PhD/MD level scientist with 2-5 years minimum of basic laboratory experience (preferably in a developmental toxicology laboratory), personnel and laboratory management experience, and demonstrated experience working on risk assessment methodology development and its application to public health issues.

Salary: Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
